Monday, January 24, 2022 (HOL) – The Minister of Foreign Affairs of Somaliland, Dr. Isse Mohamud Kayd, has said that the Somali government is not committed to concluding the talks between Somaliland and Somalia, and therefore Somaliland is suspending the talks.

In an exclusive interview with VOA Somali Service, Minister Kayd said the talks had failed and would be stopped.

“Negotiations have started in 2012, and so far it has not been fruitful. At various conferences in different countries, we are suspending the talks as Somalia’s mistakes are not ready to be resolved,” said Minister Kayd.

Kayd, meanwhile, said the Somali government had no recognition of Somaliland.

“The government of Somalia does not have any recognition for the Republic of Somaliland, so we have not been independent for 30 years,” said Minister Kayd.

Negotiations between the Somali government and Somaliland, which began in 2012, have so far failed to make significant progress, and the Somaliland government has repeatedly accused the Somali government of violating previous agreements.
