Phil Kelly, a morning anchor and weekend meteorologist for WSYX ABC 6 and WTTE FOX 28, is leaving the station to spend more time with family.

His last day will be Sunday.

In a Twitter thread posted on Friday afternoon, Kelly said he had begun to miss out on important things on weekends ever since his 12-year-old son began playing on a travel soccer team.

“It’s just not a sacrifice I’m willing to make anymore,” the Columbus native and Otterbein graduate wrote. “I feel change can be good to help re-energize and keep you moving forward. I think that’s something I need right now. I’m truly going to miss our viewers the most.”

Phil’s first job in television was with WWHO, where he was Kids Club host, according to an article on ABC 6’s website.

He then moved to South Bend, Indiana, where he was morning weather anchor and co-host of “Wake-Up” on WSJV.

After returning to Columbus, Kelly stepped away from television to open his own business.

Kelly returned to television in 2010 and first worked as a fill-in meteorologist at ABC 6/FOX 28 before becoming the meteorologist for weekend mornings.

Kelly said in his Twitter post that he has no immediate plans (other than not moving away) but is excited for “whatever life brings me next.”

“Thank you for indulging my goofiness and strange sense of humor,” Kelly wrote. “It was always my goal to just make your day a little brighter by trying to put a smile on your face. My heart is full and I am forever touched by your support and kindness.”
