Sunday, February 6, 2022 (HOL) – Somali President Mohamed Abdullahi Farmajo says his government has won the war against Al-Shabaab, while addressing the African Union Summit in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.

President Farmajo called on the African Union to take joint action against the group and other militant groups on the continent.

“Al-Shabaab is an enemy of stability on the African continent. The plans of the Peace and Security Council must unite all our efforts and forces to counter the scourge of terrorism,” said President Farmajo.

In his speech, he said his government was ready to take full responsibility for security in the country from the African Union peacekeeping force, and to implement the provisions of the recently signed AU transition plan.

Meanwhile, on Saturday, President Farmajo met with his Ethiopian counterpart Abi Ahmed to discuss ways to further strengthen political, security and economic ties between the two governments, according to his media office.

On the second day of the conference, President Farmajo and his delegation will hold talks with their counterparts on the continent and other leaders in attendance.
