Saturday, February 12, 2022 (HOL) – US Congressman Ilhan Omar has written a letter to President Joe Biden’s administration calling for a review of the 2010 and 2012 sanctions against Somalia, which are still pending.

Since the imposition of these sanctions, the situation in Somalia has changed dramatically. In the letter, Ilhan Omar asks the Biden administration how sanctions policy plays a major role in Somalia’s strategy.

April 13, 2010 Former United States President Barack Obama has issued an executive order imposing economic sanctions on those involved in the deteriorating situation in Somalia, including piracy off the coast of Somalia.

The United States has approved the use of the International Emergency Response Plan (IEEPA) in response to threats to U.S. national security and foreign policy.

Sanctions came into effect immediately.

Sanctions include the imposition of sanctions on individuals or organizations engaged in acts that directly or indirectly endanger the peace, security, or stability of Somalia.
