In the fall of 2013, BalletMet Artistic Director Edwaard Liang kicked off his career leading the professional dance troupe with a production of “Swan Lake.”

And, next spring, Liang will close his 10th season at the company with another production of “Swan Lake.”

“The 10 years went by so quickly,” Liang said. “In the beginning, I was so new, and so new as a leader. I hope that in this decade that I’ve served this organization and served this community that I’ve grown with it.”

“Swan Lake” will serve as the finale of BalletMet’s 2022-23 season, which, to celebrate Liang’s first decade of service at the company, will feature numerous nods to the company’s recent past.

“I kind of wanted to spoil myself and celebrate what we’ve all accomplished together in 10 years,” said Liang, whose choreography will be featured in “Swan Lake,” “Dorothy and the Prince of Oz” and a double bill of short works.

BalletMet looking forward

Yet, besides being a look back, the coming season also represents a decisive leap forward following two tumultuous years of programming that was modified or canceled due to the pandemic.

During the 2020-21 season, the company scrapped “The Nutcracker” for the first time in decades and offered just one production, a series of intimate performances at BalletMet’s Performance Space last summer. While the 2021-22 season boasted the return of “The Nutcracker,” the season overall featured fewer productions than usual.
