My name is Abby Bammerlin and I’ll be the Statehouse bureau intern this summer.

In the fall, I’ll be a senior at Miami University majoring in both journalism and political science. I’ll hopefully be graduating in December 2023 with a bachelor’s degree in journalism and a master’s in political science.

This fall, I’ll also be working for Miami’s student publication, The Miami Student, as its managing editor.

Why I became a journalist

I grew up in West Chester, Ohio and went to Lakota East High School. While I was there, I started writing at our school’s publication The Spark. I was instantly hooked. Getting to write, speak to interesting people and learn about important issues in our community, it was exactly what I wanted to do. I can’t imagine doing anything else!

What I like best about my job

Every day is different. As a reporter, I get to listen to people’s stories, highlight the experiences of those who may be overlooked and hold those in power accountable.

You never know what you’re going to learn and work on when you start your day. And that surprise is always the best part of the job.

What is the biggest challenge I face

My biggest challenge in journalism is always stepping out of my comfort zone and asking hard questions. But when you work as a journalist, it almost feels like you have a mission to tell someone’s story or to tell a truth. And when you’re on that mission, going up to a complete stranger and asking questions doesn’t seem as uncomfortable anymore.

What I like to do when I’m not working

When I’m not working, I can usually be found rock climbing. I’ve been climbing for over 10 years and even competed until I was a senior in high school.
