An unidentified adult died early Sunday morning after driving a car down a path and into a pond at Franklin Park on Columbus’ Near East Side, the city police Accident Investigation Unit reports.

Police said the incident occurred around 4:39 a.m. while the driver of a black 2019 Nissan Altima was driving westbound on a driving path on the southwest side of Franklin Park near the intersection of Franklin Park West and Franklin Park South.

“… For reasons still under investigation the vehicle drove into a pond,” police said.

Columbus police responded to the scene and a Columbus Division of Fire dive team was called to retrieve the driver from the pond. Medics transported the driver to Ohio State University East Hospital, where the driver was pronounced dead at 5:59 a.m. of an apparent drowning.

Police had not released the victim’s name Sunday.

The pond is part of the city’s Franklin Park, and not the Franklin Park Conservatory and Botanical Gardens.
